Description
The koala is a small bear-like, tree-dwelling, herbivorous marsupial which averages about 9kg (20lb) in weight. Its fur is thick and usually ash grey with a tinge of brown in places.
The koala gets its name from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning "no drink" because it receives over 90% of its hydration from the Eucalyptus leaves (also known as gum leaves) it eats, and only drinks when ill or times when there is not enough moisture in the leaves.
In the wild Koalas can live 12-14 years. But if someone is taking care of them, or if they are in captivity they can live 16-20 years.
Males have a scent gland on they`re chests. This gland secretes a dark sticky substance, that leaves a trace on the tree, marking the tree as its own territory.

Loving this, Cynthia! My favorite animal. I didn't realize they were in zoos other than the San Diego Zoo, but read on their site that they have some on loan to a few other zoos. So wonderful that you are able to view and photograph them. Rest is what they do, sometimes up to 20 hours. Thank you for sharing this. LF
