Description
Wood Nymphs with pipes (c)1932 by Henry Hering..Born on February 15, 1874 in New York City. He was educated under Augustus Saint Gaudens at Cooper Union and worked in the Studio of Philip Martiny from 1888-1891. He was a member of the New York Artist League from 1894 - 1898. The years 1891 - 1893 are unaccounted for. (Speculation allows that he came to Chicago with many of his student colleagues to work on the World's Columbian Exposition.) Hering studied in Paris from 1898 - 1901 at the Colarossi Academy and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He returned to the US and became a pupil/assistant to Augustus Saint Gaudens at the Cornish Studio and remained there, assuming ever greater responsibilities, until St. Gaudens death in 1907. He married co-worker Elsie Ward in 1910 and established his studio at 10 West 33rd Street in New York. Hering died in New York on January 17, 1949.
